Unsere erste Woche in der St. Thomas School

Nach den Onamferien ist es endlich so weit: Der Schulunterricht in Keralas Schulen startet wieder und Flo und ich bekommen die Möglichkeit, den Schulalltag in Kumily kennenzulernen. Ich selbst habe mich sehr auf das Unterrichten gefreut. Alleine schon, da es eine gute Abwechslung zu der Dokumentationsarbeit bei VOSARD ist. Aber natürlich können wir durch das Unterrichten auch viel über das Bildungssystem in Kerala lernen.

Morgens aufstehen... Also morgens um 5:30 Uhr! Winziges Frühstück. Hektik, Müdigkeit.. Ab in den Bus. Kurvige und lange Strecke - Übelkeit...

Onam - the state festival of Kerala

"Happy Onam!" These were probably the words which we heard most often during the last week. We heard them not only from all the VOSARD staff, but all the neighbours and members of Self Help Groups. Florian and me could participate in these celebrations. But before I start to describe our impressions, I will just give you some background information:

Onam is actually a Hindu festival, but celebrated by Malayalis (population of Kerala) of all religions. It is also the official state festival of Kerala. The people celebrate the homecoming of the mythical king Mahabali from the underworld:
